As summer rolls on, there’s no shortage of fun things to do in the Trenton area. Whether you’re looking for a day out with your family,  an evening out with your friends, or a date with someone special, you may be in the mood to try something new. Our team at Hyundai of Trenton created this list of some places to visit this summer around Trenton, New Jersey, to help you make the most of the season in the Garden State.

The Trenton Farmers Market

The Trenton Farmers Market opened in 1939 and is the oldest continuously running farmers market in New Jersey. It’s the perfect destination in the area for farm-fresh fruits and vegetables from half-a-dozen farms throughout New Jersey. Over the years, the farmer’s market grew to offer a variety of other goods, such as baked goods, smoked meats, and handmade goods.

Although operating hours for vendors may vary, the Trenton Farmers Market is home to nearly 40 different vendors. Some options for food include an Amish grocery store, a Polish deli, sweets, doughnuts, and a variety of Amish meats and poultry. If you’re shopping for other goods and gifts, some options include handcrafted soaps and body care items, vintage clothing, essential oils, and jewelry.

New Jersey State Museum

The New Jersey State Museum offers fun for the whole family. It’s home to more than two million artifacts that celebrate the cultural and natural history of the state. It has several exhibits to explore during your visit that discuss different aspects of history, culture, and science. The museum also has a planetarium that’s open only on the weekends.

One of the newest exhibits is the Jaw-Dropping World of Sharks, which is on display through January 2023. This exhibit aims to educate people about sharks to help reduce misunderstandings about the species, and it includes a free lecture series on the second Saturday of every month. The New Jersey Arts Annual: Reemergence exhibit opens June 25. This annual showcases the diverse works of local artists, and the theme this year celebrates reemerging into a constantly changing world.

The New Jersey State Museum also has special offerings for younger members of your family. For example, the Small Explorers Series is an education series for children ages 6 months to five years old to help them learn through play, crafts, and stories. Similarly, the Discovery Den is an area for families, particularly those with children ages eight and under, to play and learn together.

The Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie

The Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie is home to a collection of artifacts and art from Trenton’s cultural, historical, and industrial past and present. Located in the heart of Cadwalader Park, the museum is part of the Ellarslie Mansion, an Italianate villa built in 1848. This multi-level museum showcases a range of exhibits in different types of media, contemporary art, historical artifacts, decorative arts, and more.

The Trenton City Museum of Ellarslie also hosts various community events throughout the year. It also provides educational opportunities through its classes, lectures, and workshops. During your visit, stop at Molly’s Museum Store to browse a selection of prints, paintings, Trenton memorabilia, jewelry, and more. Purchases help support operating the museum and improving its collections.

Working Dog Winery

Working Dog Winery is an award-winning winery located approximately twenty minutes from Trenton. It grows its own grapes and makes all of its wine on its property. Its selection of estate-grown wines includes a variety of white wines, red wines, and sweet wines.

Consider making a day trip with your partner to enjoy the winery. Working Dog Winery requires guests to be at least 21 years old but doesn’t require reservations to visit. Plan to spend your visit on the patio, or bring your chairs, blankets, and pop-up tents to set up your own comfortable space on the lawn. The winery also welcomes well-behaved dogs on leashes on the lawn area of the winery.

Working Dog Winery offers wine for purchase by the bottle and a selection of wines for purchase by the glass. You may bring your own glasses or purchase glasses there for a small fee. It encourages guests to bring their own small bites to enjoy with the wine, especially snacks like fruit, cheese, and crackers that pair well with wine. It often hosts special events on the weekends that include live music and food trucks.

Trenton Thunder Ballpark

Trenton Thunder Ballpark hosts a variety of special events throughout the year. However, Trenton Thunder Ballpark is most well-known as the home of the Trenton Thunder, a collegiate summer team in the MLB Draft League. Trenton Thunder games allow your family to see some of the future greats of Major League Baseball right in your backyard. Check out the promotional schedule when deciding which game to attend. The ballpark often sponsors giveaways and themed nights, and it sometimes has discounts on food or shows post-game fireworks.
