Finally, there’s a midsize sedan with the power you crave and the efficiency you demand. Hyundai offers the Sonata in six gas-powered trim levels plus a hybrid powertrain. Each trim offers unique features designed to fit budgets of all sizes.
SE Trim – Hyundai put their 191 horsepower 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder MPI/GDI engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission in the base model SE trim. The SE achieves a 28 mpg rating for city driving, 38 mpg on the highway, and a rating of 32 mpg combined. In addition, the SE comes with a 14.8-gallon fuel tank enabling a driving range of up to 562 miles.
SEL Trim – You’ll find the same 2.5-liter engine and transmission under the SEL trim’s hood. While this powertrain puts out the same horsepower, the SEL trim mpg ratings dip ever so slightly. The SEL rates out at 27 mpg in the city, 37 mpg highway driving, and 31 mpg combined. Using a larger, 15.9-gallon fuel tank, the SEL can travel up to 588 miles on a full tank.
SEL Plus Trim – Moving to the SEL Plus trim, you get a 180 horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with GDI and continuously variable valve timing technology. While the 1.6-liter turbo delivers a slightly lower 180 horsepower it puts out a higher 195 pound-feet of torque. SEL Plus mpg ratings come in at 27/37/31 city/highway/combined, the same as the larger SEL engine.
N Line Trim – Hyundai’s sport-inspired N Line trim upgrades to a 290 horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. Its multi-port and gasoline direct fuel injection and continuously variable valve timing technology helps it pump out 311 pound-feet of torque. A matching N eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters puts the spirited driving at your fingertips.
Yet, even with all that power, the Sonata N Line comes through with ratings of 23 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. With a 15.9-gallon fuel tank, the N Line’s driving range tops out at 524 miles.
Limited Trim – The Limited trim upgrades with trim-specific exterior and interior features yet reverts to the SEL Plus 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain. Thus, the Limited trim offers the same horsepower, torque, and mpg ratings as the SEL Plus.
N Line Night Trim – Unique black-out treatments inside and out add style to the N Line Night. However, the powertrain remains the same as the N Line, with the same power, torque, and mpg ratings.
Hybrid Blue Trim – The Hybrid Blue trim uses a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams. It uses 16 valves with continuously variable valve timing, and gasoline direct injection technology paired with a 39-kW electric motor.
This powertrain relies on a 270-volt lithium-ion polymer battery, giving you 192 total system horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. You also benefit from the exceptional hybrid economy as the Hybrid Blue comes in at 50 mpg city, 54 mpg highway, and 52 mpg combined.
Hybrid SEL & Hybrid Limited Trims – The Hybrid SEL and Hybrid Limited trims use the same powertrain as the Hybrid Blue. However, the mpg ratings drop because features like larger 17-inch alloy wheels contribute to heavier curb weight. So now you get a 45 mpg rating for city driving, 51 mpg on the highway, and 47 mpg combined.
Comfort and Convenience
As you move up in trims, you see added features. The lower models come with premium cloth upholstery, while the upper trims add leather seats with heating and ventilation. Power windows and doors come standard on every model.
All your in-vehicle tech runs through an 8-inch touchscreen on the lower trims and a 10.25-inch touchscreen on the high-end trims. Each touchscreen offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth technology to sync your cellphones for hands-free operations. Now you can make calls, access navigation, stream your favorite playlists, and more using simple, intuitive voice commands.
Driver-Assist Systems
Hyundai equips every Sonata with a suite of driver-assist systems designed to improve your safety. These systems use radar and optical technology to scan the road around your Sonata and alert you to potential hazards. In some cases, these systems can provide emergency braking and steering correction if you are slow to react to the alerts.
The suite includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, which scans the road ahead and detects both cars and pedestrians. In addition, Hyundai’s Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Following Assist systems use forward-facing cameras that track your Sonata when traveling within marked lanes. These systems use gentle steering input to keep you centered and avoid unintentional drifts.
A Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go system uses radar to keep your Sonata at a preset speed and distance to the car ahead. As the traffic ahead slows, this system has the capability to bring your Sonata to a complete stop. Once the traffic moves ahead, the system will automatically engage, returning you to your preferred speed. The Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist system gives you eyes where you normally can’t see, alerting you when a vehicle enters your blind spots.
