Which Hyundai Models Are the Most Fuel-Efficient?

The cost of gasoline is a common concern among motorists. As broad price fluctuations become more frequent and worries about the environment continue to grow, increasing numbers of people are looking for ways to save at the pump. With that in mind, more manufacturers are turning their attention to fuel efficiency as a major selling point of their vehicles. Hyundai is one automaker that has channeled much of its efforts into producing greener options.

Let’s take a look at the current and upcoming lineups of Hyundai vehicles to see which ones can give you the most mileage for your hard-earned gas money.

The Most Fuel-Efficient Hyundai Models

Before looking at the gas-powered models in the lineup, we’d have to address the numerous electrics and hybrids that Hyundai has to offer. These are, of course, the most fuel-efficient of the lot, as they run purely on battery power.

The leaders of the pack are the 2022 models of the Nexo Fuel Cell, Ioniq 5, and Kona Electric—all dedicated electric SUVs. The Nexo Fuel Cell, specifically the Blue trim, has an impressive EPA-estimated range of 380 miles, which places it among the leaders in the EV market. The Limited trim is also very good, capable of traversing 354 miles before it needs a charge.

The 2022 Ioniq 5 is the runner-up. The rear-wheel-drive versions of the SE, SEL, and Limited trims have an all-electric range of 303 miles. The 2022 Kona Electric, in either of its two trims, comes in third place, with a range of 258 miles.

Then there are the hybrid models, among which the 2022 Elantra Hybrid is the top contender. The Blue trim of this compact hybrid sedan, with its six-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission and 11-gallon tank capacity, gets 53 mpg in the city and 56 mpg on the highway, while the Limited trim gets 49 and 52, respectively. The 2022 Sonata Hybrid isn’t far behind, as it gets 50/54 mpg with the Blue trim and 45/51 mpg with the SEL and Limited.

The plug-in hybrid versions of the 2022 Tucson and Santa Fe are worth mentioning here. With the Tucson PHEV, you get an all-electric range of 33 miles, a combined mpg of 35, and an MPGe of 80. The Santa Fe PHEV comes close to those numbers, with an all-electric range of 30 miles, a combined mpg of 33, and an MPGe of 76.

2023 Elantra

Not everyone is prepared to make the switch to an alternative-fuel vehicle. If that includes you, Hyundai has still got you covered. Among the gas-powered models in Hyundai’s lineup, the 2023 Elantra is the most fuel-efficient. The base SE trim of this sedan has an edge over the others. In the city, you can expect to get 33 mpg, while highway driving nets you 42 mpg. If you opt for the higher-level SEL or Limited trim, the fuel economy dips just a touch to 30 and 40 mpg, respectively.

2022 Accent

The 2022 model of the subcompact Accent is another gas-powered sedan that’s friendly to your budget. The vehicle comes in three trims—SE, SEL, and Limited—and all three get an EPA-estimated 33 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway. On top of that, the Accent has a distinguished appearance both inside and out, with classy styling on its body and a clean, simple interior. Given these characteristics, it’s an excellent vehicle for everyday commuting as well as for cruising around town with friends.

2022 Kona

The 2022 Kona is a subcompact SUV that combines boldness with practicality. You have your choice of four trims, all of which are capable of getting 30 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The Kona also has a revitalized look compared to the previous model year, boasting a sportier front end, a broader grille, and smoother shoulders.

Opt for the N Line or Limited trim and you get a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic that produces 195 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque—sufficient power to pep up your ride. Speaking of the ride, you can expect a smooth experience, as the suspension is plenty pliant and the handling of the vehicle is impressively agile.

2022 Sonata

The non-hybrid Sonata also offers great fuel economy. The base SE trim with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is the best bet here, as it gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. On top of that, it’s a sizable family sedan, with 104 cubic feet of passenger volume and ample leg room in both the front and the rear rows. In the trunk, you get 16 cubic feet of cargo volume. With all of that considered, the 2022 Sonata is a budget, and family, friendly vehicle to take on the road.

2022 Venue

Finally, there’s the compact Venue, a fairly new addition to the lineup. At all three trim levels, the 2022 Venue gets an EPA-estimated 29 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Also, though its exterior dimensions are slight—159.1 inches long, 69.7 inches wide, and 61.6 inches tall—this little SUV is surprisingly roomy inside. The total passenger volume amounts to 91.9 cubic feet, and the cargo area is 18.7 cubic feet. If you fold down the rear row, you can expand the cargo space to 31.9 cubic feet.
